Google's Mass Layoffs Continue, DeepMind's Canada Office is Closed

The technology and search engine giant, Google, was recently hit by the issue of mass layoffs due to ongoing financial efficiency efforts. As a result of this, as many as 12,000 Google employees were fired.

But apparently, after cutting employees of 12,000 people, mass layoffs at Google are not over. Google's parent company, Alphabet, has again laid off employees, this time after the company closed its DeepMind office in Edmonton, Canada.

DeepMind is one of Google's technology companies engaged in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Reporting from Gizchina, according to reports, DeepMind is closing its offices in Edmonton, Canada.

In addition, the company will also lay off some of its staff in the UK operational office. As explained above, a few days ago, Google's parent company, Alphabet announced that it would lay off 12,000 employees. DeepMind's move is also part of Alphabet's efforts to cut operational costs.

DeepMind's office in Edmonton, Canada, is the only office directly managed by the company. This makes the office consume more resources. All other DeepMind offices are located within Google offices.

The layoffs at this company follow thousands of layoffs at other tech giants including Amazon, Microsoft and Meta. Some company staff have the option of moving to another office. There is a DeepMind office in Montreal but it's in Google's Montreal office.

For your information, Google acquired DeepMind in 2014, giving it an edge over most of its competitors in the AI technology competition. But the recent development of ChatGPT, a chatbot by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, has increased investor interest in generative AI.

Now there is serious competition in the field of AI. “I am confident of the great opportunities ahead of us because of the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our initial investment in artificial intelligence,” said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently.

Meanwhile, regarding Google's previous mass layoffs, this cut of workers affected around 6 percent of all Google employees. The announcement of the layoffs was informed directly by Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai via email and uploads on the company's blog.
